Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs Concert

Adamstown Uniting Church
Sunday 3 July

CNL Brass presented twenty-one items to a mainly seniors audience in its second of three concerts for 2011. Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs prompted a varied repertoire and provided the opportunity to feature soloists, duets and trios during the performance.

Elizabeth Sturgeon, who usually plays third cornet, gave her first solo performance in front of the band, playing Share My Yoke. Bruce Fletcher and Clarence Leung combined on Soprano Cornet and Bb Cornet to present Pie Jesu, while the trombone trio of Anthony Fowler, Stephen Townsend and Arthur Howard “lightened up” the program with All Aboard-This Train is Bound for Glory.

Well-known Hymns such as Blessed Assurance, The Old Rugged Cross and Abide With Me were popular inclusions. Two of Barrie Gott’s arrangements, Light-Walk and Swingtime Religion added variety to the afternoon.

The afternoon concluded with Eric Ball’s arrangement of The Hallelujah Chorus.

It was surprising, but very pleasing for the band that members of the audience stood and applauded at the conclusion of the concert. This type of response was “a first” for the band.
