“Rhapsody in Brass” Concert
Sunday 13 October 2013

Jeremy Borthwick, guest trombonist, plays Georgia on My Mind

About one hundred and forty patrons attended the first major concert by CNL Brass under the direction of recently appointed Musical Director John Kellaway. Four Rhapsodies were featured in the programme. Jeremy Borthwick, guest trombonist, demonstrated his remarkable skill in Rhapsody for Trombone and Brass Band. Jeremy is recognised as one of the finest jazz trombonists in the country. He has performed at major jazz festivals in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The audience responded to his performance with prolonged applause. It was his first appearance with a brass band.

Euphoniums and Baritones

Rhapsody in Blue had audience appeal. This composition, dating back to 1924, was well known. Bohemian Rhapsody, first performed by the Rock group Queen, included beautiful melodic lines, soft passages and then the extremes that Queen is known for.

The Best of Bond medley included From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, You Only Live twice and the James Bond Theme.

Clarence Leung, Principal Cornet, delighted the audience with a very challenging cornet solo, A Song to Swing. He played it from memory. The Concert differed to those previously in that a number of the items were longer and more challenging. In all, eleven numbers were presented.

Comments from members of the audience were positive, praising the performance and indicating that it was a most enjoyable afternoon of musical entertainment.
