CNL Brass members and the trains

The members of Lake Macquarie Light Rail held a Sunday open day for families and friends. Brendon Jones, CNL’s euphonium player and a member of the Lake Macquarie Light Rail, organised CNL Brass to provide the entertainment.

John Kellaway signals for the train whistle accompaniment for the Train Gallop

The band, casually attired, presented concert programs mid-morning and again after lunch.

It was a unique day, probably a “world’s first”, in that the two steam trains, which operate on the track, joined in the band’s performance. Both were positioned facing each other at the station. Upon musical director John Kellaway’s signal (arm raised, finger pointing), the two train whistles blew in unison as the band played the Train Polka. Teena Wallace, solo cornet and Brendon’s wife Janice were the whistleblowers. As John’s signals were repeated, so were the whistle blasts throughout the number, much to the enjoyment of all present.

Brendon is the signals “master”, being responsible for the construction and operation of the signals box and installation of signals on the rail lines.
