CNL Brass, a B Grade band, was one of ten bands participating in the band championships. The band presented the Hymn I Know Thou Art Mine and Excalibur, an Own Choice item for adjudication in the East Coast Section 1 Brass for A and B grade brass bands. The band came third but, as a result of being the member band of the Hunter Regional Band Association that received the highest mark, was awarded the Hunter Regional Band Association’s perpetual trophy for Section 1 Brass. This Section was won by Parramatta City Band.

The afternoon’s entertainment competition, the Festival of the Bands, in which each of the ten bands presented a short entertainment concert, saw CNL Brass feature a Rock and Roll theme of four numbers, opening with Johnny O’Keefe’s Shout, followed by She’s My Baby, the Queen Greatest Hits Medley of five tunes, including Bohemian Rhapsody and We are the Champions. The band concluded its program with a Bill Halley tribute number, Rock around the Croc. The rock sound was emphasised by band members Ben on keyboard, Bobby on guitar, Anthony on bass guitar, kit percussionist Heather and our percussion “apprentice” Will. Despite an enthusiastic response from the audience, CNL Brass came third in Division 1 (for A/B Grade Brass and Concert Bands) of the Festival of the Bands. This Division was won by St Marys Brass Band, with Castle Hill RSL Youth Wind Orchestra gaining second place.
