The Musical Director, John Kellaway, chose a Program in which soloists and a duet could be featured. The first half saw performances from Peter Moulds, bass trombonist, playing I Was Born Under a Wandrin’ Star, the song from the movie Paint Your Wagon made famous for Lee Marvin’s deep, gravelly voice rendition of it.
Baritone soloist Anne Atkinson presented a delightful rendition of The Shepherd’s Song. John Unicomb, tenor horn soloist, played Over the Rainbow, a song well-known to the audience and sung by Judy Garland in the film The Wizard of Oz. Seventy-Six Trombones, Under the Boardwalk, Amazing Grace, Happy Birthday (for a band member who had a birthday) and Unchained Melody made up the remainder of the first half.
The second half opened with The Sky Boat Song, the theme song for the popular television series Outlander. Greg Smith, cornet soloist, presented the classic Irish folk melody Believe Me if all Those Endearing Young Charms. Guest tenor trombonist Andrew Burgess followed with the Hymn When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, played to an old Somerset folk melody O Waly, Waly, dating back to the 18th century. Using this tune gave the hymn a gentle, flowing, and reflective folk quality.
The Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana is a famous orchestral intermezzo from the Opera Cavalleria Rusticana. Julie Loveridge, soprano cornet soloist, was undaunted by the challenge of this classic. All the high notes were clearly audible as she “rose to the occasion”.
The John Denver composition, Perhaps Love, which he performed as a duet with Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo, was chosen as the duet by the euphonium pair of Lance Turner and David Tayler, who harmonised to perfection in their performance.
Aranjuez Mon Amour featured as a flugel horn solo in the 1996 movie Brassed Off. It is from Concierto de Aranjuez, Movement 2. Today it was featured by Cardiff Brass flugel horn soloist Murray Hetherington to the delight of the audience. The inspiring Hallelujah Chorus concluded the second half. The audience were generous in their applause for each of the numbers presented
Cardiff Brass Committee extends its sincere thanks to Teena Wallace, Musical Director of Newcastle PCYC Brass Band, who stepped in to conduct the Concert at very short notice as a result of John Kellaway becoming ill at the morning rehearsal.
Cardiff Brass acknowledges and thanks Lake Macquarie City Council for providing financial sponsorship, which assisted in staging this Concert. Brass Band music remains a contributor to the cultural events of the City of Lake Macquarie.
